Baby Strollers or Babywearing?

Standard

You feel the kicks inside, you are dreaming up the perfect nursery, and then you stop and stare at your registry when you get to strollers. Do you imagine yourself putting your baby in a stroller and going for a jog every morning? Or do you imagine putting your baby upon your chest and wrapping them or holding them tight?

198564_631111001689_4662626_n

Almost 34 weeks with Zaedyn Tai in 2011

No matter which thought you leaned toward, every baby is different, and sometimes different settings change the preference of stroller or carrier from day to day. Zaedyn wanted nothing to do with strollers when he was a baby, however this changed when we traveled overseas and started using it more and more. It was a great convenience to be able to have no other body attached with space to toss bags underneath and save my back and posture. Zaya also spent a lot of time in an Ergo Carrier early on simply because it provided the convenience of feeding and continuing to carry on playing with a toddler. However, the positive side of being able to put her in a stroller was providing space. If Zaya was carried, she would want to be latched on continuously. Also as a single Mama, having one baby in a carrier and a toddler in a stroller also made life possible. Every day with these beautiful energetic children meant time outside in nature. We never stopped exploring and living our lives, but with the convenience of a stroller as well, I am not sure how I would have managed otherwise. Picture me, baby in carrier also holding a toddler on my hip, bag on shoulder, trying to move forward. This definitely happened at times, and I can’t say it was particularly comfortable! If I had to do that often, my back would not appreciate it, but of course I would do it for these cuties.

1382061_10100154498186549_1529680648_n

For those of you who know me well, you would not really think of me going on about strollers as they were not even a part of my life. I wanted my baby nearby, or I didn’t want to push an empty stroller while holding a baby. Then I realized the positives of strollers as being convenient, walking freely, providing space for belongings during long outings, etc. Baby wearing and strollers have both played a part in my children’s lives, and I believe there is a time and place for both. I am a hippie Mama who is all about natural parenting and being at one with your baby, but it doesn’t mean that using a stroller is not as comforting. Sometimes even babies want their space! It is a great way to separate shortly while keeping that connection and closeness, beginning to provide learning of independence and freedom.

When deciding what stroller to buy, there is a lot to think about. My parents bought one in combination with a capsule carseat. The first one I had for Zaedyn was sturdy and able to travel through many terrains. At one point, I even tried a double stroller that we picked up at a garage sale. The evolution of strollers is remarkable. Within each category, there are even more factors such as is your double next to each other, below, even, or facing? Do you have a sunroof? Are the straps simple and easy? How many wheels are there? Can you remove the material to wash it? Plus so much more! Thought you were just picking a stroller. Think again. Almost every baby item requires you to think endlessly and wonder what the best possible option is for your precious baby.

Who would like to be sent a Storybook Selection Pack from Wildflower Botanicals as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?

Organic Tea

“Wildflower Botanicals is a boutique herbal business specialising in organic, fairtrade, and earth-friendly products.”

Wildflower Botanicals stocks a huge range of amazing teas down in Kaikoura. Even if you are not a huge tea drinker, I am sure that you will find something you might like. The blends are organic, and you can choose to drink them hot or cold whether you feel like a black tea, green tea, white tea, red tea, oolong, pu-erh, botanical, elemental chai, herbal, storybook, pregnancy, or seasonal blend. I can definitely say that I have been to the website many times to order, but simply could not narrow down what I wanted. They all sound so yummy.

As part of our giveaway, Meg has kindly offered a storybook selection pack to one of our readers. I love the idea of a tea being made for children of all ages. Yes, even you young-at-heart adults.

“Our storybook blends are made using organic botanical ingredients – fruits, flowers, leaves, seeds, bark, and roots – so they are naturally tannin and caffeine-free.” ~Wildflower Botanicals

Wildflower Botanicals
Which blend would you choose?

I was really curious to see what Zaedyn might think of the teas. He mostly drinks water, almond milk or breastmilk, smoothies, and coconut water so I knew that this would be something quite different for him. I loved watching his facial expressions as he tried the tea and turned into a Rock Star.

Wildflower Botanicals
vegan chocolateI am pretty sure that he thought it was quite exciting to be having a real tea party. If you have been following along on Facebook, we had also received a lovely order of raw vegan chocolates from David’s family. Zaedyn really does have a very good memory and knew that it would not be a complete tea party without some chocolate. We love lovingearth products which you can purchase from Wildflower Botanicals as well. They are so yummy and well worth it. I love dark chocolate, and I have always enjoyed the combination of chocolate and mint. I was a bit hesitant about the orange & gubinge, but I have to say that I really like it. It isn’t a flavour that I would choose, but I am so glad that I have now. Apparently it is quite hard to keep stocked!

vegan chocolate
I cannot tell you which blend I like the best. I thought that it would be great to try each and see what we thought, but I can honestly say that they are all amazing. I love the different flavour combinations of each. It really is a lot of fun drinking a tea and thinking about an enchanted garden, Snow White, sweet dreams, rock star, Red Riding Hood, Gingerbread cottage, and Little Boy Blue. Many children seem to love tea parties, and this is an awesome way to have some fun and use your imagination alongside them as well as on your own. I know that I will be drinking them even when Zaedyn isn’t!

Lastly, just wanted to let you know about the Fe Blend (pregnancy) we ordered to help increase my iron storage and absorption of iron. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, just make sure to mention so that certain herbs can be left out. 1 tsp of Fe Blend per cup four times a day should be effective. As all the other teas, it is lovely. If you are interested in trying it out, enter the code AROHANUI at checkout for a 15% discount.

The Hemp Farm NZ

Who would like to be sent a 250ml bottle of Organic Hemp Seed Oil from Hemp Farm NZ Ltd as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?

Hemp Farm
The Hemp Farm was started by Dave and Anna who are passionate about the many uses of hemp and its environmental benefits. It is an absolutely amazing plant that is extremely versatile, yet it has been given such a bad name from the association to illegal drugs which has caused many different laws throughout countries. By the way, all of the goodness that comes out of these plants are not actually drugs and are extremely good for you!

“Hemp seed oil is an amazing addition to a vegan diet as it does provide those essential fatty acids in the optimum 3-1 ratio, plus all your essential minerals, amino acids and vitamin E. Plus it is chemical free and environmentally sustainable.” ~Hemp Farm NZ Ltd

Their oil is cold-pressed and 100% organic packed with lots of nutrition. There are so many uses for the oil. An easy way to add hemp oil into your food is in a salad, kale, veggies, or smoothies. I would love to make hemp pesto.

vegan kale

I really like hemp milk which is also extremely beneficial. I have even had hemp cereal, hemp butter, hemp seeds, and all sorts of yummy raw hemp desserts. There are plenty of opportunities in the future to see the benefits of this plant being used and being legal to consume in New Zealand, and I really look forward to following along and seeing The Hemp Farm grow and make this happen in New Zealand. If you come across hemp seed meal or hemp seed flour, it is a human grade product, but it is only legally able to be sold as animal feed in NZ. However, it is legal for humans to consume.

In case you missed it, The Hemp Farm was featured on Global Radar, and there is an article about their hemp seed on p.15 in the Nourish magazine. Hopefully all of the media coverage and people becoming more knowledgable about the uses and environmental benefits of hemp will help to gain more acceptance. Check out their New Zealand Hemp Crop Gallery. Recently they had their hemp fiber and hurd harvest which you can watch here.

Most of you know how much I like cloth nappies, and hemp is great for nappies and inserts. I would also love to use hemp in making body care, jewelry, and even in my house if I ever decided to build. The possibilities really are endless!

Go Bamboo

Standard

Who would like to be 1 of 5 lucky winners to be sent a Go Bamboo pack including 1 adult toothbrush, 1 child toothbrush, 1 box of 20 clothes pegs, 1 box of cotton buds, and 1 wax comb as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?

Go Bamboo
We love Go Bamboo products, and I am excited that so many of you have now become interested in their products as well. This New Zealand company is doing an awesome job providing biodegradable and sustainable products to protect our beaches and the environment.

“Our mission is to offer biodegradable, sustainable alternatives to everyday, disposable, plastic items and so limit the amount of plastic ending up in our oceans, on our beaches or in landfill.” ~Go Bamboo

These are effective and affordable award winning products that can be found throughout many stockists around the country, even across Australia and in the U.K. We bought ours through Cheeky Cherubs. Jacquie wrote a pretty cool blog post about their Environmentally Friendly Toothbrush Graveyard! I am sure that most children would love to hammer their toothbrushes into the ground when they are finished.

We all use bamboo toothbrushes! At the moment we have them in different places so we can tell them apart, but I have been trying to think of a clever way to make them each our own. What would you do to make them all different in your household?

We were also sent a few samples of cotton buds with our order which are awesome. They are made from a sustainable bamboo stick. I didn’t realise that they even made little bamboo wax combs for your keychain which I am very excited to try out. Any other surfers out there?

Check out the throwaway facts and about bamboo to see what makes all of Go Bamboo products a much better alternative. They also have a school fundraising program which is a fantastic way to involve the community and to learn and teach others about being sustainable.

The clothes pegs have multiple uses! In case you missed my previous post, they are perfect for making an eco-friendly driftwood display.

They are also great for hanging out cloth nappies and other laundry as well as keeping our gluten-free bread fresh.

ExtraFresh

Standard

Who would like to be 1 of 4 lucky winners to be sent a 6 pack carton of ExtraFresh as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?

ExtraFresh
We have only recently come across ExtraFresh, but we love the idea. We were given a single pack to try which was delivered to us with a range of other goodies from EcoDeals.

“Designed and made in NZ, especially for domestic fridges, ExtraFresh keeps fruit and vegetables fresher for longer, decreasing spoilage and ensuring that you enjoy the best possible eating experience.” ~ExtraFresh

To read more about how these packs work, check out the info section on their website. In short, these packs help reduce ethylene which you trap by putting all of your fruits and vegetables into a drawer. Without these packs, ripening occurs much more quickly which can lead to more wasted food.

I know that I do not like wasting food, and although we do compost what we do not eat, I do not like the idea of wasted money and food. Whether you put a lot of time and effort into growing your own fruit and vegetables or consider the environmental impact and labour from food production to supply in your local supermarket, there should be no desire to waste food and a lot more concern with the amount that ends up in landfill. The amount of wasted food is ridiculous in my opinion, and I am all for a product that can help preserve produce to stay fresher for longer. If you are buying produce from the supermarket, these will also allow you to buy a variety of produce without worrying about it not lasting. This will be better for a healthier lifestyle or save extra trips to the store which will save you time and money as well as saving you from contributing to the environmental impact due to more travel.

For those with one vegetable drawer, the ExtraFresh 6 pack carton will give you freshness for the entire year, or 6 months for a two drawer fridge.

Another way to involve the community in supporting sustainability is to fundraise with ExtraFresh. Whether schools or sport clubs want to be involved, this is a great way to involve the younger generation in protecting our environment and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Although ExtraFresh is quite new to us, I absolutely love the concept and the positive impact within the environment, our health, and the community.

Is there an ExtraFresh pack in your fridge?

Enter for your chance to have fresher produce all year long.

Would you like to be sent an ecostore cleaning pack with 1 500ml laundry liquid, 1 500ml dish liquid, 1 auto dish tabs, 1 spray cleaner, 1 toilet cleaner, 1 lemongrass soap, and 1 bucket as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?
Ecostore
We use a range of ecostore cleaning products throughout our house. The best part about these products is that they don’t test on animals. Ecostore products do not contain horrible chemicals, and they are a healthier alternative concerned with the environment and sustainability.

I think it is awesome to see how this dream began and how this local business has become so successful and contributed to protecting our environment. The products are easily accessible across supermarkets nationwide as well as many other shops. I have seen Bin Inn carry some of the bigger refill items. We try to reuse what we can by saving containers and refilling them rather than continuing to buy small items every time.

Besides their awesome products, ecostore has a blog which “discusses eco and health related issues, including natural parenting, allergies, art, culture, politics and the stuff that matters most…” It is definitely worth checking out, and I love the way that this company focuses on the overall well-being of the environment, not just specifically their products.

If you haven’t tried any ecostore products, make sure that you do. Eco-friendly products, especially cleaning ones, can sometimes be overlooked and thought not to work as well, but I can assure you that is not what we have experienced. They are definitely a much better choice than other products with chemicals because they do a great job as well as help protect the environment. We do not have any harsh chemical products around our house. You will only find ecostore!

Do you have a favourite ecostore product that you use or something that you would like to try?

It is hard to choose a favourite, but the product we definitely use the most is the hand wash. We have not actually tried the auto dish tabs yet, but we do use the powder. Make sure to check out the ingredients as a lot of products are vegan, but not all of them 🙂

Make sure to enter our giveaway for your chance to win this amazing ecostore cleaning pack.

Angel Foods Vegan Goodies & Cherub Dairy-Free

Standard

Would you like to be sent 2 packs of Vegan Cheesey Sauce from Angel Food and 2 tubs of Cherub Dairy-Free Cream Cheese Alternative as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?
NZ Vegan
I know Zaedyn would!
Vegan Mac N Cheese
We bought some Orgran Gluten Free rice and corn pasta macaroni to try out our Vegan Cheesey Sauce. I posted this photo a little while back on Facebook which some of you may have seen because he was so excited. He loves pasta, and this was the first time he had macaroni.

I used rice milk to make our cheesey sauce, and once I turned the stove up a little bit higher, it started to thicken up nicely. It was the first time we had ever tried this sauce so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Mixed in with gluten-free macaroni, it was a great combination by the look of Zaedyn’s expressions!

He had plenty of servings of vegan cheesey macaroni. I honestly cannot remember the last time that I had macaroni so it was hard to compare, but it did remind me more like a white sauce. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Either way it was yummy, but I cannot decide what it reminds me of.

Also, it makes 3 cups of sauce which can be a lot depending on how many people will be eating. There are plenty of other possible options to use this sauce with as well including a cheesey sauce on vegetables, lasagna, or even for nachos. We did try a few tortilla chips out in the sauce, and I think it would be perfect for nachos.

Do you eat Angel Food Cheesey Sauce? How do you use it, or what would you like to try it with?

Click here to see lots of photos posted previously from Gluten-Free Vegan Bagels with Cherub Dairy-Free Cream Cheese Alternative. Zaedyn gave it two thumbs up, and he also enjoyed it on toast and with Orgran Toasted Multigrain Crispibread with Quinoa (similar to Cruskits).

vegan cream cheese

Although Zaedyn was not quite sure what to think of the cream cheese alternative at first, he ended up loving it. He kept asking for “cheese”. When it was all gone, he said, “Oh no! The cheese is gone!” I was laughing as it was just so cute how he said it. We definitely made sure to get some more to enjoy on some gluten-free vegan hot cross buns.
Cherub Dairy Free Cream Cheese
This was another yummy way to use our cream cheese alternative. Obviously softer than bagels, but it reminds me of cinnamon raisin bagels with cream cheese. Yum! The cream cheese didn’t seem as melty this time around, and I put a lot on Zaedyn’s. He would eat all of his “cheese” off the top, and then ask for more.

Check out Cherub Dairy-Free on Facebook as there are different creative ways to use this cream cheese alternative. Would you use the cream cheese alternative as a spread, or in recipes?

Good luck with your entries in the giveaway, and make sure to share every day for extra entries.

Thanks heaps to Alice from Angel Food & Cherub Dairy-Free!

Another product from Angel Food that we eat is Cheezly which is perfect for pizza, cheese toast, toppings for tacos or nachos, quesadillas, added as cubes in pasta salad, or mixed in with scones. Anything you can think of really!

Exciting Christmas Already! Karma?

Standard

A sewing book, Christmas cracker, macadamia nuts, visit from a special friend, and emailing the winner of the Te Reo Singalong. What an exciting day! Karma? I truly spend far more time on my blog then I should because I really do enjoy telling everyone about all of the wonderful companies out there or somehow helping or inspiring you through our life. I do not make money through all this, but I do gain a whole lot by helping other people who are interested or care about similar values as us. This makes all of the companies I write about special as well because I choose carefully what I want to include and share with you. I was going to list them all here, but I think I might need to make a link to them.  The only ad I have is for Living Foods Lifestyle, simply because I really wanted to make the site easily accessible and shared with all of you, but I only gain from you making purchases through my link to their site. Even then you would be supporting me to buy more raw foods to share recipes with you so there is still a cycle of helping. This is where your comments, pins, tweets, and likes on Facebook really come in. Yes, I am on Twitter now in case you want to follow. Not completely sure of it all, but I will get there. I really do appreciate everyone who takes the time to read my blog, comment, and interact through social media. Days like this make me think about the saying “What goes around comes around :).” Positive karma of course!

NZ sewing
Thank you so much to Penny from Little Housewife. I was so excited to receive Home Sewn in the mail today. I recently bought a Bernette Bernina sewing machine and have lots of projects I hope to make next year. Sewing my own clothes is definitely a goal of mine so I am really thankful to have won this giveaway. I also love that this book profiles 10 leading New Zealand Designers. I am looking forward to hopefully practicing sewing on my new machine over the holidays. Thanks again, Penny! Make sure to check out Penny’s blog and Facebook page about “a blissful childhood of happy memories which she passes on to her children through cooking, baking, crafts, gardening, places to visit, tips and tricks, & their happy home.”

homemade cracker

Then our beautiful Christmas cracker arrived today! Megan from mousehouse made this lovely cracker. Zaedyn had been a bit impatient, sneaking around our living tree to untie the string, and attempting to peak in. I kept retying the strings on, and I think it became a game to him. As you can tell, we will both try to wait patiently until Christmas to open it, however, it is a bit tempting! For those of you who don’t know, this all started with Katie from Mummy Adventures who set up this Christmas cracker swap. After signing up, we received our swap partners who we could then make our handmade crackers for and send off to wherever they live in New Zealand. Do you think you can wait until Christmas to find out what is inside? I will let you know once the cracker has been opened. In the meantime, check out Megan’s blog or Facebook page for “crafty projects, home and garden ideas, fun things for kids to make and do, eco-friendly ideas and home organising tips.”

Now the macadamia nuts I received are not the ones I ordered, but ones given to me just because the topic came up about them. I am so grateful for these even being passed onto me. Now for the hard part. Opening them all up!

Then a very special friend came to visit us. Zaedyn was happy and cheeky as ever running around. Even if this included throwing pegs. It is lovely to have a friend that you get along with and can share all sorts with, talking so much and forgetting how much time has passed.

Oh, and I finally upgraded to a Canon 60D after 6 1/2 years taking heaps of photos with my Canon Rebel XT. I can already see how busy I am going to be next year between sewing my own clothes and sewing in general, making raw foods, and learning about my new camera. Zaedyn loves it already because there is a big screen and he can see the picture I took of the lawnmower. At 19 months, he is pretty clever with all the words he says. At the moment, all we hear about is the lawn mower over and over again. He is very fascinated by them and will repeatedly get excited about them shouting, “LAWN MOWER!”

lawn

It has been so busy lately, but I really appreciate everyone who entered the Te Reo Singalong Giveaway. I have emailed the winner. If you did not win, they are definitely books that are worth buying. If you are interested, you can buy directly from the Te Reo Singalong website.

Although the bamboodie sale has ended, there is still time to enter our eco peko giveaway for a 100% organic cotton t-shirt for your child or someone you know. Simply go to the post and comment or add multiple comments to gain extra entries before Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 8:00PM NZ time.

karmaFinally, if you have not heard of Copono, please check out their current campaign. I have more to tell you soon, but in short, Copono is an app to track and rate vegan things in New Zealand. This will make life for Kiwis easier as you can scan barcodes of products to find out if they are vegan or not. 85 Kiwis are already using this app, but with your help they can share it with everyone in Aotearoa. There are 24 days left to reach their goal of $5000. Even a contribution of $10 will help them get closer to reaching their goal. Vegan or not, please consider contributing to this vegan campaign to help Copono assist you in not only buying vegan food, but also finding sustainable and ethical choices. Thanks!

What goes around comes around 🙂
