Cooking with free energy from the sun means money saved and more time to play instead of standing in the kitchen. Plus, it supports our eco-friendly lifestyle in so many ways! This makes us another step closer toward being sustainable. Have you heard of SUNFLAIR or solar ovens? I have dreamed of building a solar oven and using a dehydrator for so many years. Now, we are beyond excited to be cooking with our new portable solar oven.
Two thumbs up from Zaedyn!
We have yet to decide what solar food we will make next, but it was awesome to start with something simple. Zaedyn loves rice and veggies anyways, but rice and veggies become so exciting when it becomes solar food. With a sunny day, our solar oven heated up fast. Rice is cooked similar to how you would cook it on a stove. After letting some water heat up, rice is gently stirred in and left for only 20-40 minutes. Amazing! I can definitely say that this was the first time I have ever mowed the lawn and cooked rice at the same time. No need to worry about it burning!
This also acts as a dehydrator so I am thinking kale chips would be a good option to make. I would love to start eating more raw foods again and am keen to experiment with some raw sun burgers and raw breads. Endless possibilities! Did you know that you can even use it to bake a cake or cookies? What would you make in a solar oven?
Are you wondering how it works? UV Rays are trapped inside the oven, and SUNFLAIR has reflective material with an insulated layer to keep the heat inside and directed at the special pots, making yummy solar food thanks to the sun.
I am so excited that Zaedyn gets to be involved and be a part of new ways toward being eco-friendly. The pots do get really hot to touch, but Zaedyn loved finding our special place to cook and watching while he waited for our food to be done. This also gives us another chance to talk about solar power and other ways that we can use it.
SUNFLAIR Solar Ovens are currently on sale over at EcoDeals! There are two versions: standard and deluxe. The deluxe oven has an extra rack and tray as well as a large cooking pot. Besides the pots and racks, both sets come with the oven, a carry bag, thermometer, and a water pasteurisation indicator. If you are in New Zealand, be sure to subscribe to EcoDeals. They have amazing offers, and it is great to see what eco-friendly products are available through their deals and shop.
If you miss the deal, SUNFLAIR Solar ovens can be purchased from eBright Energy NZ or their retailers in New Zealand, eBright Energy AU or their retailers in Australia, or SUNFLAIR in North America. Check out all of the sites for their recipe section!

We have entered one of the photos of Zaedyn, our little conscious consumer, drinking his Rock Star storybook tea from Wildflower Botanicals in the Conscious Consumer Photo Competition. We would love your support just by tweeting, liking, voting, or sharing our photo
Conscious Consumers is currently running a photo competition to bring their badges to life. If you do not already know about them, they accredit businesses and help you find and discover ways to be socially responsible and environmentally friendly. You can even earn free stuff by supporting businesses through the website or smartphone app.
The current badges fall under Community, Smart Waste, and Ethical Products which include: Local, Food rescue, BYO containers, Recycling, Eco-packaging, Composting, Eco-cleaners, Free range, Fair trade, Sustainable fish, Vege/Vegan, and Organic. I look forward to watching the expansion across New Zealand where you will be able to find accredited business wherever you go. Although I do not have a flash phone, anyone with smartphones can quickly find certain badges within regions throughout New Zealand.
Zaedyn is drinking Wildflower Botanicals tea which is organic and local from Kaikoura. He was also eating lovingearth raw vegan chocolate. The bag the tea comes in is also recyclable so this photo incorporates many Conscious Consumer badges. Thanks heaps for supporting our lil conscious consumer! We joined a bit late so have been trying to work our way up, but there are still 14 days to go if you wish to enter as well.
Another huge thank you to all of the amazing businesses involved! Whether you have won anything or not, I hope that you will support those that you have not heard of before, or continue to support the businesses that you love. If you do win something, please make sure to share with us what you think and also thank the businesses that have kindly donated everything 🙂
A huge thank you to all of you for entering as well. It was amazing to see so much interest, and I am so happy that I was able to share some of these vegan and eco-friendly local products with you.
Here are all of the individual posts in case you missed some:

Who would like to be 1 of 5 lucky winners to be sent a Go Bamboo pack including 1 adult toothbrush, 1 child toothbrush, 1 box of 20 clothes pegs, 1 box of cotton buds, and 1 wax comb as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?
We love Go Bamboo products, and I am excited that so many of you have now become interested in their products as well. This New Zealand company is doing an awesome job providing biodegradable and sustainable products to protect our beaches and the environment.
“Our mission is to offer biodegradable, sustainable alternatives to everyday, disposable, plastic items and so limit the amount of plastic ending up in our oceans, on our beaches or in landfill.” ~Go Bamboo
These are effective and affordable award winning products that can be found throughout many stockists around the country, even across Australia and in the U.K. We bought ours through Cheeky Cherubs. Jacquie wrote a pretty cool blog post about their Environmentally Friendly Toothbrush Graveyard! I am sure that most children would love to hammer their toothbrushes into the ground when they are finished.
We all use bamboo toothbrushes! At the moment we have them in different places so we can tell them apart, but I have been trying to think of a clever way to make them each our own. What would you do to make them all different in your household?
We were also sent a few samples of cotton buds with our order which are awesome. They are made from a sustainable bamboo stick. I didn’t realise that they even made little bamboo wax combs for your keychain which I am very excited to try out. Any other surfers out there?
Check out the throwaway facts and about bamboo to see what makes all of Go Bamboo products a much better alternative. They also have a school fundraising program which is a fantastic way to involve the community and to learn and teach others about being sustainable.
The clothes pegs have multiple uses! In case you missed my previous post, they are perfect for making an eco-friendly driftwood display.
Enter our giveaway for your chance to win this awesome Go Bamboo pack thanks to Mick & Anna.
Would you like to be sent an ecostore cleaning pack with 1 500ml laundry liquid, 1 500ml dish liquid, 1 auto dish tabs, 1 spray cleaner, 1 toilet cleaner, 1 lemongrass soap, and 1 bucket as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?
We use a range of ecostore cleaning products throughout our house. The best part about these products is that they don’t test on animals. Ecostore products do not contain horrible chemicals, and they are a healthier alternative concerned with the environment and sustainability.
I think it is awesome to see how this dream began and how this local business has become so successful and contributed to protecting our environment. The products are easily accessible across supermarkets nationwide as well as many other shops. I have seen Bin Inn carry some of the bigger refill items. We try to reuse what we can by saving containers and refilling them rather than continuing to buy small items every time.
Besides their awesome products, ecostore has a blog which “discusses eco and health related issues, including natural parenting, allergies, art, culture, politics and the stuff that matters most…” It is definitely worth checking out, and I love the way that this company focuses on the overall well-being of the environment, not just specifically their products.
If you haven’t tried any ecostore products, make sure that you do. Eco-friendly products, especially cleaning ones, can sometimes be overlooked and thought not to work as well, but I can assure you that is not what we have experienced. They are definitely a much better choice than other products with chemicals because they do a great job as well as help protect the environment. We do not have any harsh chemical products around our house. You will only find ecostore!
Do you have a favourite ecostore product that you use or something that you would like to try?
It is hard to choose a favourite, but the product we definitely use the most is the hand wash. We have not actually tried the auto dish tabs yet, but we do use the powder. Make sure to check out the ingredients as a lot of products are vegan, but not all of them 🙂
Make sure to enter our giveaway for your chance to win this amazing ecostore cleaning pack.
Would you like to be sent a OSFA BeBops nappy and amber necklace as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?
These are amazing pocket nappies that have worked really well for us. Here are some previous photos of Zaedyn wearing his BeBops nappy for the first time. Check out the post for more details. Basically, the combination of the microfibre and bamboo fleece seem to be a perfect combination. Plus, snaps or domes work much better for us than velcro. Zaedyn would never have a nappy on if we used velcro!
Cloth nappies save disposables from ending up in landfill, are super cute, and they save you lots of money. We use them full-time, and I cannot imagine it any other way. If you need more convincing, check out my Cloth Nappy tab, Pinterest board, and Cloth Nappy Week.
As part of Cloth Nappy Week, we were sent a new BeBops nappy to try. As we have received a few things for baby lately, Zaedyn seems to think that everything coming in the post is for baby. Zaedyn was so excited to see the nappy and tell me that it was for baby!
We have also recently purchased a new amber necklace for my sister’s baby that is due to arrive in July, and our little bub due to arrive at the end of September or beginning of October. The healing green is not a colour you often come across, and I loved it as soon as I saw it.
Zaedyn has worn his amber necklace since he was a few months old, and they have been amazing. We have only used amber beads and Chamomilla for teething. The healing baltic amber is a perfect natural alternative for your little one, and they are not only helpful for teething. If you or your child suffers from eczema, you may find that amber will reduce your symptoms. Here are a few other ways they might be able to help you or your baby so be sure to check out the current stock at BeBops along with the new stock of teething jewelry.
Check out the website and Facebook for more information. Go & like BeBops on Facebook to earn an extra entry in the giveaway and keep up to date with cloth nappies and recipes. There is also a competition open which will be drawn when there is 4,000 likes. Not long to go now at 3,939! Tash posts super yummy vegan recipes as well which always makes me hungry.
If you have been following along with Cloth Nappy Week, there were BeBops nappies being hidden around the country. It was awesome to follow along and be a part of it, and it is amazing to see all of the cloth nappy love which wouldn’t be possible without all of the sponsors. There was a huge nappy sale at 50% off so you will find that many of the new prints are out of stock, but there will be more to come :).
Make sure to enter for your chance to win a gorgeous BeBops cloth nappy and amber necklace.

A few chairs, a blanket, and some beautiful sarongs…our lounge was transformed into a magical place.
Zaedyn was full of excitement as he ran in and out of his new hiding place. Yes, with only one gumboot! I could not help smiling and playing along as I saw his big smiles and listened to his never ending giggles. They really are the best! We spent the entire morning playing in his new fort. He definitely had a few tickles whenever I found him.
If that wasn’t enough excitement for one day, we decided to search our garage for some of the bamboo that David cut down for us. It was quite difficult trying to put our teepee together with little hands to help, but I love that he was so curious and interested in building our teepee. I literally just took some twine and wrapped it around lots of different ways. It worked for us. The bamboo alone was exciting, but I knew we had to find some sort of cover. Hmmm…
Yip, our Winter sheet will do. We hopefully won’t be needing it for awhile anyways! Wrapped around and tucked under the twine, it completed our teepee and another new hiding place.
After a bit of playing around, Zaedyn was telling me, “Yoga,” and went looking for the yoga mat. I helped roll it out, and we found his yoga book. He was super excited about the tree pose that he is still doing it in the picture once I turned the page. I love hearing him get excited about yoga and that he can tell me tree pose and show me what it is. I think he is a clever little yogi.
Add some gluten-free vegan scones, and your tea party is that much yummier than your pretend treats.
Can you tell how much fun we have been having? I was kind of getting used to our living room being crowded by a fort and teepee, but we decided to return our dining chairs back to the table until next time. However, we still have our giant teepee in our lounge, and with this much needed rain in NZ after a drought, I think it might be staying up for awhile. We are lucky enough to have a covered deck so that we can get some fresh air and still have some time outside even when it is pouring down. Do you and your little ones build forts or teepees? Possibly even some other cool hiding places in empty boxes? Feel free to share as you might inspire us in our next fort or hiding space.
If you have been following us on Facebook, you may have noticed that we are going to be doing a very special giveaway with some awesome NZ businesses. A huge thank you to BeBops, ExtraFresh, Hemp Farm NZ Ltd, and Go Bamboo! I am still sorting out all of the details so feel free to check out their websites and Facebook pages in the meantime. These are all NZ based and are amazing in their efforts to support a sustainable future. If you are a vegan, eco-friendly, or gluten-free company who would like to share your products/services, please email me to be a part of our giveaway. To all of our readers, you will have some pretty exciting news coming soon and a great opportunity to win! Stay tuned for more details…
What an awesome Pinterest find! I spotted this through Sanuk, some of our favourite footwear. Since I prefer to be barefoot or in jandals, Sanuk’s, “It’s not a shoe, it’s a sandal” is perfect if I need to wear shoes. Plus, they’re vegan! I love their motto, “Smile, pass it on!” When we were down in Kaikoura, I found another pair on sale. I do not usually worry about a bag, but the lady found the ones they come in which are a biodegradable corn bag. Another reason to love Sanuk!
Anyways, I have been looking at making this driftwood display for awhile now and have finally managed to make it. If you are looking for a new way to display photos, this is super easy, cheap, and eco-friendly. I will admit ours is a bit rough due to the twine we used, but we figured it added to the rugged beachy look. You can easily put new photos up whenever you feel like it. We found the driftwood at the beach and ordered Go Bamboo pegs from Cheeky Cherubs. These are environmentally friendly pegs that are only $4 for 20 pegs. Especially a great buy considering they are biodegradable and sustainable bamboo.
Although our photo display above is not as eco-friendly as our driftwood one, we love these photos as well so I just wanted to share with you another cool way to arrange your photos. Now to find a special place for our driftwood photo display.
We were super excited to be able to go and pick up free bamboo. We made a trip on Sunday to cut and pick some up as much as we could fit in the car, and we were back again for more tonight with a good range of thin and thick bamboo. We have so many ideas to use the bamboo after drying it out. We are thinking teepees, gardening, and a xylophone at the moment. If you have any tips, or want to let us know your ideas on what you would do with bamboo, we would love to hear them.
Oh, and speaking of bamboo…I still have not shared our day out at Kiritehere so I will quickly leave you with a few photos of our bamboodies from eco peko. We love them! Remember the awesome organic tops we ordered and one we gave away? If not, check out our eco peko post. Well, their online shop has now re-opened after their move, and there is a HUGE opening sale tomorrow 8am to 5pm with everything half price. Plus, by sharing their Facebook status, you will receive a code that gives you free shipping. Go and check out their website for some awesome deals and natural organic clothing.
Another HUGE thank you to those of you voting every day or sharing. Arohanui Vegan Love is now at #5 and not far from possibly moving up with a bit of help, or at least staying in the Top 5.
