Sustainable Paperless

Standard

Planning your next party, but don’t want to use all your ink, paper, time, and trees?!

logo

Paperless Post has you covered! I am so excited that I was recently introduced to this sustainable option by a colleague. I opened my email to instantly view my invitation and realized how this was a game changer. Although there are other evites available, on Paperless you watch a card digitally come out of an envelope and open to your screen for you to view. It takes away that feeling of just reading a screen and combining sustainability with novelty and connection.

I cannot wait to use Paperless Post for my next invitation! What event do you have coming up that you will use Paperless Post for?

My sister finds out tomorrow whether she is having a boy or girl this summer so I just found myself wandering through the baby shower invitations. With my first born, everything was jungle themed, and I just found some that I would have used back then!

The fruit baby images remind me of The Bump. How many of you followed or are following along to see the size of your baby in comparison to fruit? It seems to be pretty standard these days! We all must know or ask what fruit the baby is each week.

In contrast to all these baby invites, the invitation I originally received was for an event at a business location for their Grand Opening. The possibilities are endless, and you may even decide to create more invites that you may otherwise not have created if you had to buy and print out or write on invites to send.

I was also just looking back at Zaedyn’s first birthday party invites and remembered printing extras to send to our family overseas. It would have been much cheaper and simpler to send them a Paperless Post instead of printing and posting across the ocean. Looking at the invite though makes you realize how important and special invitations can be.

Whatever your reason for choosing Paperless Post, I know that you will be happy from spending less, helping save the Earth, the convenience of creating and sending from your own home in comparison to running around finding invites especially with a toddler in tow, providing ease for friends and family to quickly respond with a click of a button, having many options available, and so much more!

Here’s your chance to win 1000 coins ($90 value) that can be used on paperlesspost.com for your next evite, thank you cards, stationary, and more by entering through a Rafflecopter giveaway

Good luck!

Baby Strollers or Babywearing?

Standard

You feel the kicks inside, you are dreaming up the perfect nursery, and then you stop and stare at your registry when you get to strollers. Do you imagine yourself putting your baby in a stroller and going for a jog every morning? Or do you imagine putting your baby upon your chest and wrapping them or holding them tight?

198564_631111001689_4662626_n

Almost 34 weeks with Zaedyn Tai in 2011

No matter which thought you leaned toward, every baby is different, and sometimes different settings change the preference of stroller or carrier from day to day. Zaedyn wanted nothing to do with strollers when he was a baby, however this changed when we traveled overseas and started using it more and more. It was a great convenience to be able to have no other body attached with space to toss bags underneath and save my back and posture. Zaya also spent a lot of time in an Ergo Carrier early on simply because it provided the convenience of feeding and continuing to carry on playing with a toddler. However, the positive side of being able to put her in a stroller was providing space. If Zaya was carried, she would want to be latched on continuously. Also as a single Mama, having one baby in a carrier and a toddler in a stroller also made life possible. Every day with these beautiful energetic children meant time outside in nature. We never stopped exploring and living our lives, but with the convenience of a stroller as well, I am not sure how I would have managed otherwise. Picture me, baby in carrier also holding a toddler on my hip, bag on shoulder, trying to move forward. This definitely happened at times, and I can’t say it was particularly comfortable! If I had to do that often, my back would not appreciate it, but of course I would do it for these cuties.

1382061_10100154498186549_1529680648_n

For those of you who know me well, you would not really think of me going on about strollers as they were not even a part of my life. I wanted my baby nearby, or I didn’t want to push an empty stroller while holding a baby. Then I realized the positives of strollers as being convenient, walking freely, providing space for belongings during long outings, etc. Baby wearing and strollers have both played a part in my children’s lives, and I believe there is a time and place for both. I am a hippie Mama who is all about natural parenting and being at one with your baby, but it doesn’t mean that using a stroller is not as comforting. Sometimes even babies want their space! It is a great way to separate shortly while keeping that connection and closeness, beginning to provide learning of independence and freedom.

When deciding what stroller to buy, there is a lot to think about. My parents bought one in combination with a capsule carseat. The first one I had for Zaedyn was sturdy and able to travel through many terrains. At one point, I even tried a double stroller that we picked up at a garage sale. The evolution of strollers is remarkable. Within each category, there are even more factors such as is your double next to each other, below, even, or facing? Do you have a sunroof? Are the straps simple and easy? How many wheels are there? Can you remove the material to wash it? Plus so much more! Thought you were just picking a stroller. Think again. Almost every baby item requires you to think endlessly and wonder what the best possible option is for your precious baby.

A Taste of the Future

Tea, re-imagined. Whole leaf tea, brewed, and crystallized.

IMG_8646

In collaboration with the most experienced tea masters and tea farmers around the world, Pique Tea sources the top 5% of tea leaves in the world to bring you one of the healthiest beverages in an easy to prepare option wherever you are. By combining modern science and ancient tradition, their slow brew process allows you to receive this crystal form packed with fresh flavour and even more antioxidants.

open-sachets.png

“Tea crystals are the biggest innovation in tea since the invention of the teabag.” -Founder, Simon Cheng, http://www.piquetea.com

Yes, you may be having the same initial thoughts as I had when I was contacted to try out this new unique tea. Tea in a sachet? Why? The fact that they were organic gained my attention to look into these a bit more, and also simply for the curiosity of why and how you could put tea in a sachet. I love loose leaf tea. The process of brewing tea can be fun whether you are brewing a cup or a huge pot. I can, however, completely see the niche and positive reasons for why someone would want to drink crystallized tea. It is perfect every time, still allowing you to live your life to the fullest and on the go without missing out. Tea is health. Tea is life.

I have learned that this isn’t just another product trying to make it into the market with complete misunderstanding of what tea is all about. The founder, Simon Cheng, comes from a genuine place in loving tea and incorporating it into his healthy lifestyle as well as having a deep appreciation for ancient health. His drive created this new unique product that is actually real, sourced, and created on a deeper level and understanding. Pique Tea is spot on.

Available in 5 varieties of black and green teas ~ Pique Tea is all organic, pure, and delicious hot or cold. They have a sampler pack where you can enjoy them all, or choose your favourite from Sencha, Mint Sencha, Jasmine, Early Grey, or English Breakfast.

Quality Guaranteed! Pique even goes beyond to ensure quality by batch testing antioxidant levels and making sure that no heavy metals are present. When preparing my tea, I use reverse osmosis water so that I am not adding unnecessary and unwanted chemicals to this pure drink.

IMG_8669

I have been drinking my tea sampler, experimenting with hot and cold tea, and I am impressed. My favourite has been sipping on cold brew Jasmine in a mason jar. If you are a tea drinker who loves real loose-leaf tea, don’t be afraid to give Pique a chance. For all you busy parents out there who may not have an extra hand or even an extra second to make tea, Pique is the perfect answer. It also minimizes the desire to turn towards unhealthy drinks when it is so easy to make a cuppa with their sachets. Throw some sachets in your bag, or pack them on the plane, and you will always have quick tea on hand.

I am always all about being sustainable and although this doesn’t completely fall into that category, I understand the reality of busy everyday lives in today’s world. Plus, you don’t have to drink the sachets every time you want to enjoy a cuppa. Mix it up. Sometimes brew from loose leaf, and sometimes grab a sachet on the go. Just know, you won’t be sacrificing taste if you reach for Pique. I love that it tastes like genuine tea. Yes, you can add sweetener if you like, but I love pure tea, no milk or sugar added.

As far as I have personally seen, most packaged or quick teas involve sugar, something that I am simply not into. Other products available on the market taste like processed products. Fortunately, Pique sachets really do taste like a good cup of tea, so go ahead and energize your body, mind, and soul by remembering that it’s always tea time! Replace other beverages with this magical tea, giving you a more natural caffeine boost and antioxidants.

You can purchase flavours individually, as part of a tea sampler, or you can even create the perfect tea plan for you. It really doesn’t get much simpler than this. You can have organic single serve sachets delivered straight to your door. Add in hot or cold water, stir, and enjoy!

Organic Tea

“Wildflower Botanicals is a boutique herbal business specialising in organic, fairtrade, and earth-friendly products.”

Wildflower Botanicals stocks a huge range of amazing teas down in Kaikoura. Even if you are not a huge tea drinker, I am sure that you will find something you might like. The blends are organic, and you can choose to drink them hot or cold whether you feel like a black tea, green tea, white tea, red tea, oolong, pu-erh, botanical, elemental chai, herbal, storybook, pregnancy, or seasonal blend. I can definitely say that I have been to the website many times to order, but simply could not narrow down what I wanted. They all sound so yummy.

As part of our giveaway, Meg has kindly offered a storybook selection pack to one of our readers. I love the idea of a tea being made for children of all ages. Yes, even you young-at-heart adults.

“Our storybook blends are made using organic botanical ingredients – fruits, flowers, leaves, seeds, bark, and roots – so they are naturally tannin and caffeine-free.” ~Wildflower Botanicals

Which blend would you choose?

I was really curious to see what Zaedyn might think of the teas. He mostly drinks water, almond milk or breastmilk, smoothies, and coconut water so I knew that this would be something quite different for him. I loved watching his facial expressions as he tried the tea and turned into a Rock Star.

Wildflower Botanicals
vegan chocolateI am pretty sure that he thought it was quite exciting to be having a real tea party. If you have been following along on Facebook, we had also received a lovely order of raw vegan chocolates from David’s family. Zaedyn really does have a very good memory and knew that it would not be a complete tea party without some chocolate. We love lovingearth products which you can purchase from Wildflower Botanicals as well. They are so yummy and well worth it. I love dark chocolate, and I have always enjoyed the combination of chocolate and mint. I was a bit hesitant about the orange & gubinge, but I have to say that I really like it. It isn’t a flavour that I would choose, but I am so glad that I have now. Apparently it is quite hard to keep stocked!

vegan chocolate
I cannot tell you which blend I like the best. I thought that it would be great to try each and see what we thought, but I can honestly say that they are all amazing. I love the different flavour combinations of each. It really is a lot of fun drinking a tea and thinking about an enchanted garden, Snow White, sweet dreams, rock star, Red Riding Hood, Gingerbread cottage, and Little Boy Blue. Many children seem to love tea parties, and this is an awesome way to have some fun and use your imagination alongside them as well as on your own. I know that I will be drinking them even when Zaedyn isn’t!

Lastly, just wanted to let you know about the Fe Blend (pregnancy) we ordered to help increase my iron storage and absorption of iron. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, just make sure to mention so that certain herbs can be left out. 1 tsp of Fe Blend per cup four times a day should be effective. As all the other teas, it is lovely. If you are interested in trying it out, enter the code AROHANUI at checkout for a 15% discount.

Posh Puffs Gourmet Vegan Marshmallows

Standard

Who would like to be 1 of 2 lucky winners to be sent a pack of Posh Puffs Gourmet Vegan Marshmallows as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?

Vegan Marshmallows

New Zealand made gourmet marshmallows using natural flavours varying throughout the seasons that are gluten-free and made in small batches by sisters Clare and Sarah. Yum! Not all of their marshmallows are vegan, but I think it is awesome that they have taken on this new adventure into experimenting and providing vegans with a delicious vegan marshmallow to enjoy.

Vegan Marshmallow

The current vegan flavour: raspberry and coconut! I love both of these so they make the perfect combination. We were so excited when our box arrived, even beautifully packaged. Zaedyn was pretty curious and fascinated as to what they might be. He initially pulled some bits of coconut off and was not quite sure about the stickiness on his hands, but after trying the marshmallows, he realised that they were pretty yummy! He loves fresh raspberries 🙂

vegan marshmallows

As with many other things, I cannot remember the last time I had a marshmallow, and I don’t think that I have ever had a gourmet marshmallow. When I think of marshmallows, I always think of beach campfires and s’mores.

As someone who loves raspberries and coconut, I can definitely say that I really enjoyed these vegan marshmallows. I was a bit disappointed when they were all gone. I would love to be eating more right now. We even managed to save David one, and he liked it as well. Probably from the coconut, he said that they reminded him of a lamington. I am curious to see what the future vegan flavours might be. Check out their website and Facebook page to see some photos of their beautiful marshmallows. I just spotted a Lemon and Poppy Seed photo which sounds like another great combination to me. If you were to choose the next vegan marshmallow flavour, what would it be (either from current flavours or your imagination)?

Do you live in Nelson or plan on passing through? Posh Puffs have a stall at the Farmers Market and Sunday Market. Their marshmallows are even being sold in Fresh Choice in Nelson city and stockists in Nelson, Richmond, Mapua, Blenheim, and soon to be in Wellington. You will only find the vegan marshmallows at the markets or by ordering online. However, I am sure they can be seen elsewhere in the future if all of you show some interest. They really are worth it for a special treat or for someone special.

The Hemp Farm NZ

Standard

Who would like to be sent a 250ml bottle of Organic Hemp Seed Oil from Hemp Farm NZ Ltd as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?

Hemp Farm
The Hemp Farm was started by Dave and Anna who are passionate about the many uses of hemp and its environmental benefits. It is an absolutely amazing plant that is extremely versatile, yet it has been given such a bad name from the association to illegal drugs which has caused many different laws throughout countries. By the way, all of the goodness that comes out of these plants are not actually drugs and are extremely good for you!

“Hemp seed oil is an amazing addition to a vegan diet as it does provide those essential fatty acids in the optimum 3-1 ratio, plus all your essential minerals, amino acids and vitamin E. Plus it is chemical free and environmentally sustainable.” ~Hemp Farm NZ Ltd

Their oil is cold-pressed and 100% organic packed with lots of nutrition. There are so many uses for the oil. An easy way to add hemp oil into your food is in a salad, kale, veggies, or smoothies. I would love to make hemp pesto.

vegan kale

I really like hemp milk which is also extremely beneficial. I have even had hemp cereal, hemp butter, hemp seeds, and all sorts of yummy raw hemp desserts. There are plenty of opportunities in the future to see the benefits of this plant being used and being legal to consume in New Zealand, and I really look forward to following along and seeing The Hemp Farm grow and make this happen in New Zealand. If you come across hemp seed meal or hemp seed flour, it is a human grade product, but it is only legally able to be sold as animal feed in NZ. However, it is legal for humans to consume.

In case you missed it, The Hemp Farm was featured on Global Radar, and there is an article about their hemp seed on p.15 in the Nourish magazine. Hopefully all of the media coverage and people becoming more knowledgable about the uses and environmental benefits of hemp will help to gain more acceptance. Check out their New Zealand Hemp Crop Gallery. Recently they had their hemp fiber and hurd harvest which you can watch here.

Most of you know how much I like cloth nappies, and hemp is great for nappies and inserts. I would also love to use hemp in making body care, jewelry, and even in my house if I ever decided to build. The possibilities really are endless!

Go Bamboo

Who would like to be 1 of 5 lucky winners to be sent a Go Bamboo pack including 1 adult toothbrush, 1 child toothbrush, 1 box of 20 clothes pegs, 1 box of cotton buds, and 1 wax comb as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?

Go Bamboo
We love Go Bamboo products, and I am excited that so many of you have now become interested in their products as well. This New Zealand company is doing an awesome job providing biodegradable and sustainable products to protect our beaches and the environment.

“Our mission is to offer biodegradable, sustainable alternatives to everyday, disposable, plastic items and so limit the amount of plastic ending up in our oceans, on our beaches or in landfill.” ~Go Bamboo

These are effective and affordable award winning products that can be found throughout many stockists around the country, even across Australia and in the U.K. We bought ours through Cheeky Cherubs. Jacquie wrote a pretty cool blog post about their Environmentally Friendly Toothbrush Graveyard! I am sure that most children would love to hammer their toothbrushes into the ground when they are finished.

We all use bamboo toothbrushes! At the moment we have them in different places so we can tell them apart, but I have been trying to think of a clever way to make them each our own. What would you do to make them all different in your household?

We were also sent a few samples of cotton buds with our order which are awesome. They are made from a sustainable bamboo stick. I didn’t realise that they even made little bamboo wax combs for your keychain which I am very excited to try out. Any other surfers out there?

Check out the throwaway facts and about bamboo to see what makes all of Go Bamboo products a much better alternative. They also have a school fundraising program which is a fantastic way to involve the community and to learn and teach others about being sustainable.

The clothes pegs have multiple uses! In case you missed my previous post, they are perfect for making an eco-friendly driftwood display.

They are also great for hanging out cloth nappies and other laundry as well as keeping our gluten-free bread fresh.

Would you like to be sent an ecostore cleaning pack with 1 500ml laundry liquid, 1 500ml dish liquid, 1 auto dish tabs, 1 spray cleaner, 1 toilet cleaner, 1 lemongrass soap, and 1 bucket as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?
Ecostore
We use a range of ecostore cleaning products throughout our house. The best part about these products is that they don’t test on animals. Ecostore products do not contain horrible chemicals, and they are a healthier alternative concerned with the environment and sustainability.

I think it is awesome to see how this dream began and how this local business has become so successful and contributed to protecting our environment. The products are easily accessible across supermarkets nationwide as well as many other shops. I have seen Bin Inn carry some of the bigger refill items. We try to reuse what we can by saving containers and refilling them rather than continuing to buy small items every time.

Besides their awesome products, ecostore has a blog which “discusses eco and health related issues, including natural parenting, allergies, art, culture, politics and the stuff that matters most…” It is definitely worth checking out, and I love the way that this company focuses on the overall well-being of the environment, not just specifically their products.

If you haven’t tried any ecostore products, make sure that you do. Eco-friendly products, especially cleaning ones, can sometimes be overlooked and thought not to work as well, but I can assure you that is not what we have experienced. They are definitely a much better choice than other products with chemicals because they do a great job as well as help protect the environment. We do not have any harsh chemical products around our house. You will only find ecostore!

Do you have a favourite ecostore product that you use or something that you would like to try?

It is hard to choose a favourite, but the product we definitely use the most is the hand wash. We have not actually tried the auto dish tabs yet, but we do use the powder. Make sure to check out the ingredients as a lot of products are vegan, but not all of them 🙂

Make sure to enter our giveaway for your chance to win this amazing ecostore cleaning pack.

BeBops Nappies & Amber

Standard

Would you like to be sent a OSFA BeBops nappy and amber necklace as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?
Cloth Nappy
These are amazing pocket nappies that have worked really well for us. Here are some previous photos of Zaedyn wearing his BeBops nappy for the first time. Check out the post for more details. Basically, the combination of the microfibre and bamboo fleece seem to be a perfect combination. Plus, snaps or domes work much better for us than velcro. Zaedyn would never have a nappy on if we used velcro!

cloth nappy

Cloth nappies save disposables from ending up in landfill, are super cute, and they save you lots of money. We use them full-time, and I cannot imagine it any other way. If you need more convincing, check out my Cloth Nappy tab, Pinterest board, and Cloth Nappy Week.
cloth nappy

As part of Cloth Nappy Week, we were sent a new BeBops nappy to try. As we have received a few things for baby lately, Zaedyn seems to think that everything coming in the post is for baby. Zaedyn was so excited to see the nappy and tell me that it was for baby!

cloth nappy

We have also recently purchased a new amber necklace for my sister’s baby that is due to arrive in July, and our little bub due to arrive at the end of September or beginning of October. The healing green is not a colour you often come across, and I loved it as soon as I saw it.

Zaedyn has worn his amber necklace since he was a few months old, and they have been amazing. We have only used amber beads and Chamomilla for teething. The healing baltic amber is a perfect natural alternative for your little one, and they are not only helpful for teething. If you or your child suffers from eczema, you may find that amber will reduce your symptoms. Here are a few other ways they might be able to help you or your baby so be sure to check out the current stock at BeBops along with the new stock of teething jewelry.

If you have been following along with Cloth Nappy Week, there were BeBops nappies being hidden around the country. It was awesome to follow along and be a part of it, and it is amazing to see all of the cloth nappy love which wouldn’t be possible without all of the sponsors. There was a huge nappy sale at 50% off so you will find that many of the new prints are out of stock, but there will be more to come :).
