Solti Tea Party

Standard

Solti now has a SuperTea Line made with pure, clean water, chlorine and fluoride free, no metals or chemicals!

IMG_0015.jpg

The line up consists of two caffeine free teas: Rooibos Chai and Arctic Chaga. Jasmine Pearl contains 30mg caffeine, Ceremonial Matcha 34mg, and Dragon Oolong 60mg caffeine.

“Contrast to coffee which not only contains caffeine, acidity and low pH making for a burst of energy followed by a crash and contributing to acidosis, our organic tea combined with a higher pH purified water makes for a less acidic beverage. The tea containing caffeine will give you a boost without moving your body into acidosis. Pure energy in a bottle, giving you a boost with no crash and bringing you more vitality and hydration.” -Ryne O’Donnell, Founder & CEO of Solti

IMG_9930.jpg

Could it be time for tea? It’s ALWAYS tea time! Zaedyn was a huge fan of the previous African Rooibos Chai Latte so it isn’t surprising that he reached straight for the Rooibos Chai, a perfect choice for the fall season.

IMG_9950.jpg

Although I am all about these custom glass bottles with a hidden little surprise if you look at the bottom, we wanted to have a bit of fun with our little tea set.

IMG_9955.jpg

Zaedyn showed beautiful coordination and concentration as he transferred our vital liquids, not spilling a drop.

IMG_9942.jpg

It doesn’t get much better than this: learning at home with your Mama, having a private tea party taste testing the new Solti Teas while your sister sleeps, staying hydrating, and sneaking in a few little tea time raw vegan goodies!

SUNFLAIR Solar Oven

Standard

Cooking with free energy from the sun means money saved and more time to play instead of standing in the kitchen. Plus, it supports our eco-friendly lifestyle in so many ways! This makes us another step closer toward being sustainable. Have you heard of SUNFLAIR or solar ovens? I have dreamed of building a solar oven and using a dehydrator for so many years. Now, we are beyond excited to be cooking with our new portable solar oven.

dehydratorZaedyn searched for the perfect spot to set up our oven.

dehydratorHe helped set up one rack with two collapsible pots & the thermometer.

dehydratorAfter waiting patiently, Zaedyn was right into eating his rice & veggies.

The Result?

dehydrator

Two thumbs up from Zaedyn!

We have yet to decide what solar food we will make next, but it was awesome to start with something simple. Zaedyn loves rice and veggies anyways, but rice and veggies become so exciting when it becomes solar food. With a sunny day, our solar oven heated up fast. Rice is cooked similar to how you would cook it on a stove. After letting some water heat up, rice is gently stirred in and left for only 20-40 minutes. Amazing! I can definitely say that this was the first time I have ever mowed the lawn and cooked rice at the same time. No need to worry about it burning!

This also acts as a dehydrator so I am thinking kale chips would be a good option to make. I would love to start eating more raw foods again and am keen to experiment with some raw sun burgers and raw breads. Endless possibilities! Did you know that you can even use it to bake a cake or cookies? What would you make in a solar oven?

Are you wondering how it works? UV Rays are trapped inside the oven, and SUNFLAIR has reflective material with an insulated layer to keep the heat inside and directed at the special pots, making yummy solar food thanks to the sun.

I am so excited that Zaedyn gets to be involved and be a part of new ways toward being eco-friendly. The pots do get really hot to touch, but Zaedyn loved finding our special place to cook and watching while he waited for our food to be done. This also gives us another chance to talk about solar power and other ways that we can use it.

SUNFLAIR Solar Ovens are currently on sale over at EcoDeals! There are two versions: standard and deluxe. The deluxe oven has an extra rack and tray as well as a large cooking pot. Besides the pots and racks, both sets come with the oven, a carry bag, thermometer, and a water pasteurisation indicator. If you are in New Zealand, be sure to subscribe to EcoDeals. They have amazing offers, and it is great to see what eco-friendly products are available through their deals and shop.

If you miss the deal, SUNFLAIR Solar ovens can be purchased from eBright Energy NZ or their retailers in New Zealand, eBright Energy AU or their retailers in Australia, or SUNFLAIR in North America. Check out all of the sites for their recipe section!

Eco friendly competition
Conscious Consumers is currently running a photo competition to bring their badges to life. If you do not already know about them, they accredit businesses and help you find and discover ways to be socially responsible and environmentally friendly. You can even earn free stuff by supporting businesses through the website or smartphone app.

The current badges fall under Community, Smart Waste, and Ethical Products which include: Local, Food rescue, BYO containers, Recycling, Eco-packaging, Composting, Eco-cleaners, Free range, Fair trade, Sustainable fish, Vege/Vegan, and Organic. I look forward to watching the expansion across New Zealand where you will be able to find accredited business wherever you go. Although I do not have a flash phone, anyone with smartphones can quickly find certain badges within regions throughout New Zealand.

Zaedyn is drinking Wildflower Botanicals tea which is organic and local from Kaikoura. He was also eating lovingearth raw vegan chocolate. The bag the tea comes in is also recyclable so this photo incorporates many Conscious Consumer badges. Thanks heaps for supporting our lil conscious consumer! We joined a bit late so have been trying to work our way up, but there are still 14 days to go if you wish to enter as well.

Eco-friendly Driftwood Photo Display

Standard

eco-friendly photo

eco-friendly pegs

What an awesome Pinterest find! I spotted this through Sanuk, some of our favourite footwear. Since I prefer to be barefoot or in jandals, Sanuk’s, “It’s not a shoe, it’s a sandal” is perfect if I need to wear shoes. Plus, they’re vegan! I love their motto, “Smile, pass it on!” When we were down in Kaikoura, I found another pair on sale. I do not usually worry about a bag, but the lady found the ones they come in which are a biodegradable corn bag. Another reason to love Sanuk!

Anyways, I have been looking at making this driftwood display for awhile now and have finally managed to make it. If you are looking for a new way to display photos, this is super easy, cheap, and eco-friendly. I will admit ours is a bit rough due to the twine we used, but we figured it added to the rugged beachy look. You can easily put new photos up whenever you feel like it. We found the driftwood at the beach and ordered Go Bamboo pegs from Cheeky Cherubs. These are environmentally friendly pegs that are only $4 for 20 pegs. Especially a great buy considering they are biodegradable and sustainable bamboo.

Vegan

Although our photo display above is not as eco-friendly as our driftwood one, we love these photos as well so I just wanted to share with you another cool way to arrange your photos. Now to find a special place for our driftwood photo display.

Bamboo

We were super excited to be able to go and pick up free bamboo. We made a trip on Sunday to cut and pick some up as much as we could fit in the car, and we were back again for more tonight with a good range of thin and thick bamboo. We have so many ideas to use the bamboo after drying it out. We are thinking teepees, gardening, and a xylophone at the moment. If you have any tips, or want to let us know your ideas on what you would do with bamboo, we would love to hear them.

Oh, and speaking of bamboo…I still have not shared our day out at Kiritehere so I will quickly leave you with a few photos of our bamboodies from eco peko. We love them! Remember the awesome organic tops we ordered and one we gave away? If not, check out our eco peko post. Well, their online shop has now re-opened after their move, and there is a HUGE opening sale tomorrow 8am to 5pm with everything half price. Plus, by sharing their Facebook status, you will receive a code that gives you free shipping. Go and check out their website for some awesome deals and natural organic clothing.

Copono:Valuable App for All Kiwis

Standard

Vegan AppCopono’s mission: “to make conscious consumption simple.”

What is Copono?

As I mentioned in my last post, Copono is an app to track and rate vegan things in New Zealand. This will make life for Kiwis easier as you can scan barcodes of products to find out if they are vegan or not. 85 Kiwis are already using this app, but with your help they can share it with everyone in Aotearoa. There are 23 days left to reach their goal of $5000. Even a contribution of $10 will help them get closer to reaching their goal. Vegan or not, please consider contributing to this vegan campaign to help Copono assist you in not only buying vegan food, but also finding sustainable and ethical choices.

“Copono is quick.

Copono is simple.

Copono is easy.

Buy products that resonate with you.”

Copono

Why Vegans should support this app?

Copono will make your life easier. Taking out the time spent reading labels and researching online to find mixed answers, this app will quickly tell you if a product is vegan or not by simply scanning a barcode. Isn’t technology amazing? We also have to thank the Vegan Society of Aotearoa for creating the Vegan Big Book of Products and inspiring Copono to turn this into an app.

Being vegan for quite some time now, I do not particularly buy a lot of processed foods, and I buy at a lot of food from specialty stores where I seem to be aware of ingredients and ethical products. However, there are always new products being made or recipes that require new ingredients. At first, I thought that this app doesn’t really affect me, but actually it does and in an even bigger way than I realised. One reason this app could be helpful is the fact that my husband eats quite differently than me. Although he knows the basics of what is vegan or not, he often texts me asking about ingredients or additives. I know that this app would be great for him, and I know that I could use the app as well to find out products that he might like. I have also found myself looking at new products and reading labels for products to feed my son. If I want to make others vegan food or get asked whether or not certain products are vegan, I can easily let them know with this app. Plus, if you have friends or family who are not vegan and want to buy you something or make you a vegan meal, they can use this app to be certain that the products they buy you are vegan.

The bigger reason for supporting this app though is that even if you do not think you will use it, think about all of the others that will. Everyone is at a different point in their vegetarian, vegan curious, or vegan journey. Some have more knowledge of ingredients than others, some might have more knowledge about ethical companies, some might eat more processed foods than others, but we are all on our own journey to live a conscious lifestyle. By supporting Copono, you not only help yourself, but you are helping animals, the environment, and others with similar goals. It is bigger than just the app, but through it you are helping to support positive vegan ethics.

Why contribute even if you are not vegan?

Copono is more than finding vegan products. Whether you look into healthy options or need to avoid products due to allergies or intolerances, this app will be beneficial to you, too. You might simply need to avoid dairy or eggs, but why not use this app to take out the guessing and make shopping easier. At least you know that vegan products won’t contain either. Let’s face it. Reading labels can be tricky even if you have been doing it for a long time. Companies do not always want you to know the truth, and additives can easily change.

If you don’t think this app is useful for you, what about for your children, family, or friends. You may find yourself needing to embrace changes due to an allergy within the family, or you may find yourself needing to make a meal for someone who is vegan or has allergies or intolerances. This is the perfect app to help you in all of these situations.

Although you might not be completely vegan, you may be interested in supporting sustainable, ethical, and healthy buying. Although some products might have clear labeling, you may find yourself in the shop hesitating whether to support a certain product or brand. Why not leave it up to Copono. They have done all the hard work to simplify buying for you. If you support this app, you will have instant answers at your fingertips.

Finally, curious or not, you might just be in the Christmas spirit and find yourself willing to make a contribution to something that will help a lot of people and support others who truly care about the environment.

Beyond New Zealand?

Even if you find yourself across the world, imagine how Copono could help you when you come for a holiday in New Zealand. Not being familiar with products, brands, or food additive numbers, the last thing you want to be doing on your holiday is standing in the supermarket reading the back of every label. This app extends beyond the use of just Kiwis.

Check out the campaign to contribute to Copono Vegan for Kiwis.

A virtual high-five, getting Copono early, enjoying a vegan dinner, becoming a lifetime member, or joining the team retreat and future, there’s perks for all contributions. With 2,000+ members in the Vegan Society of Aotearoa, even a $10 contribution from everyone would surpass the $5,000 goal. I will put a link up on my page and there are a few of the campaign already being shared around so please take a second to re-share on your own wall. The power of social media is huge, and together we can help support Copono’s 12 month effort by simply taking a second to contribute and share with others.

Will You Support Sustainable Living?

eco peko bamboodie sale + giveaway *CLOSED*

organic

I love how social media connects you to things that you may not ever come across through your own searches, but things that you absolutely love. Even through all of our organic searches, I had never heard about eco peko. Have you?

Eco peko is an Australian family business that I want everyone to know about.

eco : concerned with living things in relation to their environment
peko : Ancient god of crops. The protector of the fields.

It can be really hard to find stylish organic clothing, but eco peko has a lovely range for children and adults. Made from 100% Certified organic cotton or bamboo with a super high thread count and even green knitting, stitching, and dyeing processes. With this kind of commitment to sustainability and pure products, what’s not to like? They are even members of 1% for the Planet so your purchases mean donations to local environmental groups.

Being good for your skin and the environment, I could not resist buying a few tops for Zaedyn. The top I would love to have which is not currently on their website is Gimmie ABCs not GMOs. It was a hard decision as I like quite a few things, but here is what we decided on…

organic

It's Easy Being Green

it’s easy being green t-shirt, of course we chose retro green!

Earth Baby

earth baby t-shirt to “take up the greenie cause by knitting themselves out in sustainable clothing”

I joked with David about buying the my dad recycles more than your dad t-shirt if only it were true. He quickly responded, “Depends on who you are talking to.” As a family we are actually very good at recycling and limiting our waste. We don’t even put trash out every week because we are conscious of the products we buy so that we limit the amount of waste that we send to landfill. I do not often like the sort of tops that compare Dads, however, I am somewhat regretting that we didn’t buy this top because it is quite unique. We enjoy leading by example, and I would love for Zaedyn to be quite proud of reducing, reusing, and recycling as I am sure that he will.

Check out the details for the items you like because most of them are generous sizing to get the most wear possible, but we ended up getting some of them in smaller sizes to fit now. Daisy the cow and it’s easy being green modeled by Zaedyn are size 6-12 months, and the earth baby t-shirt is 1 year. Plus, there are colour choices for each shirt. The smaller sizes come in an envelope neck while the bigger sizes come in a round neck.

I absolutely love the baby bamboodies! Go to the website to see what they look like. Zaedyn’s size was out of stock, otherwise I would have ordered him one. Guess what? You’re in luck! Eco peko has a new shipment that just arrived for the…

309 Road: Sustainable Tourism

Standard

Surrounded by bush and hidden away, take the 309 Road through Coromandel to end up at the “quirkiest theme park in NZ”. Over 70% of recycled materials to construct these attractions along with wood from a sustainable forest, water powering attractions which is heated by solar power, wastewater filtered and recycled to be used in the vegetable garden, and the cafe using local suppliers and organic produce is what makes this attraction eco-friendly and sustainable. A theme park with no electricity!

The entrance is lined with flags, welcoming people from around the world. Your eyes will be instantly drawn to the ‘Slim Turner’, the most photographed thing at Waterworks. Made of random items replaced a couple times a year, this wheel has water continually flowing through from the creek across the way.

Walking through the cafe and out the doors, you make your way through a beautiful and yummy vegetable garden, onto the start of these “kiwi ingenuity” attractions. I have heaps and heaps of photos, but I don’t want to go through everything and spoil the fun. All I can say is that this should definitely be on your list of things to do. I am sure that you will find yourself laughing at signs as well as yourselves. My cheeky husband even tricked me into pulling a lever which had water squirting down from above me. We made our own fun throughout Waterworks as we tried to squirt each other and became intrigued with the amount of interesting and creative attractions there were. It literally is fun for all ages, and I am pretty sure that David enjoyed acting like a big kid. Check out his attempt at the human hamster wheel trying to go completely around…

Waterworks

My favourite thing had to be the flying fox. Do you know anywhere else where you can just walk up the steps, grab the rope, and off you go? Luckily David tested it out first, however, as I am lighter I went zooming across and flung up quickly toward the tires. Yes, a few tires at the end is what stops you from going any further. We were full of laughs and continued going on the flying fox only to find an even better one in the bush just further along.
