Our Little Conscious Consumer

We have entered one of the photos of Zaedyn, our little conscious consumer, drinking his Rock Star storybook tea from Wildflower Botanicals in the Conscious Consumer Photo Competition. We would love your support just by tweeting, liking, voting, or sharing our photo :)

Eco friendly competition
Conscious Consumers is currently running a photo competition to bring their badges to life. If you do not already know about them, they accredit businesses and help you find and discover ways to be socially responsible and environmentally friendly. You can even earn free stuff by supporting businesses through the website or smartphone app.

The current badges fall under Community, Smart Waste, and Ethical Products which include: Local, Food rescue, BYO containers, Recycling, Eco-packaging, Composting, Eco-cleaners, Free range, Fair trade, Sustainable fish, Vege/Vegan, and Organic. I look forward to watching the expansion across New Zealand where you will be able to find accredited business wherever you go. Although I do not have a flash phone, anyone with smartphones can quickly find certain badges within regions throughout New Zealand.

Zaedyn is drinking Wildflower Botanicals tea which is organic and local from Kaikoura. He was also eating lovingearth raw vegan chocolate. The bag the tea comes in is also recyclable so this photo incorporates many Conscious Consumer badges. Thanks heaps for supporting our lil conscious consumer! We joined a bit late so have been trying to work our way up, but there are still 14 days to go if you wish to enter as well.

Organic Tea

“Wildflower Botanicals is a boutique herbal business specialising in organic, fairtrade, and earth-friendly products.”

Wildflower Botanicals stocks a huge range of amazing teas down in Kaikoura. Even if you are not a huge tea drinker, I am sure that you will find something you might like. The blends are organic, and you can choose to drink them hot or cold whether you feel like a black tea, green tea, white tea, red tea, oolong, pu-erh, botanical, elemental chai, herbal, storybook, pregnancy, or seasonal blend. I can definitely say that I have been to the website many times to order, but simply could not narrow down what I wanted. They all sound so yummy.

As part of our giveaway, Meg has kindly offered a storybook selection pack to one of our readers. I love the idea of a tea being made for children of all ages. Yes, even you young-at-heart adults.

“Our storybook blends are made using organic botanical ingredients – fruits, flowers, leaves, seeds, bark, and roots – so they are naturally tannin and caffeine-free.” ~Wildflower Botanicals

Which blend would you choose?

I was really curious to see what Zaedyn might think of the teas. He mostly drinks water, almond milk or breastmilk, smoothies, and coconut water so I knew that this would be something quite different for him. I loved watching his facial expressions as he tried the tea and turned into a Rock Star.

Wildflower Botanicals
vegan chocolateI am pretty sure that he thought it was quite exciting to be having a real tea party. If you have been following along on Facebook, we had also received a lovely order of raw vegan chocolates from David’s family. Zaedyn really does have a very good memory and knew that it would not be a complete tea party without some chocolate. We love lovingearth products which you can purchase from Wildflower Botanicals as well. They are so yummy and well worth it. I love dark chocolate, and I have always enjoyed the combination of chocolate and mint. I was a bit hesitant about the orange & gubinge, but I have to say that I really like it. It isn’t a flavour that I would choose, but I am so glad that I have now. Apparently it is quite hard to keep stocked!

vegan chocolate
I cannot tell you which blend I like the best. I thought that it would be great to try each and see what we thought, but I can honestly say that they are all amazing. I love the different flavour combinations of each. It really is a lot of fun drinking a tea and thinking about an enchanted garden, Snow White, sweet dreams, rock star, Red Riding Hood, Gingerbread cottage, and Little Boy Blue. Many children seem to love tea parties, and this is an awesome way to have some fun and use your imagination alongside them as well as on your own. I know that I will be drinking them even when Zaedyn isn’t!

Lastly, just wanted to let you know about the Fe Blend (pregnancy) we ordered to help increase my iron storage and absorption of iron. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, just make sure to mention so that certain herbs can be left out. 1 tsp of Fe Blend per cup four times a day should be effective. As all the other teas, it is lovely. If you are interested in trying it out, enter the code AROHANUI at checkout for a 15% discount.

Posh Puffs Gourmet Vegan Marshmallows

Standard

Who would like to be 1 of 2 lucky winners to be sent a pack of Posh Puffs Gourmet Vegan Marshmallows as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?

Vegan Marshmallows

New Zealand made gourmet marshmallows using natural flavours varying throughout the seasons that are gluten-free and made in small batches by sisters Clare and Sarah. Yum! Not all of their marshmallows are vegan, but I think it is awesome that they have taken on this new adventure into experimenting and providing vegans with a delicious vegan marshmallow to enjoy.

Vegan Marshmallow

The current vegan flavour: raspberry and coconut! I love both of these so they make the perfect combination. We were so excited when our box arrived, even beautifully packaged. Zaedyn was pretty curious and fascinated as to what they might be. He initially pulled some bits of coconut off and was not quite sure about the stickiness on his hands, but after trying the marshmallows, he realised that they were pretty yummy! He loves fresh raspberries 🙂

vegan marshmallows

As with many other things, I cannot remember the last time I had a marshmallow, and I don’t think that I have ever had a gourmet marshmallow. When I think of marshmallows, I always think of beach campfires and s’mores.

As someone who loves raspberries and coconut, I can definitely say that I really enjoyed these vegan marshmallows. I was a bit disappointed when they were all gone. I would love to be eating more right now. We even managed to save David one, and he liked it as well. Probably from the coconut, he said that they reminded him of a lamington. I am curious to see what the future vegan flavours might be. Check out their website and Facebook page to see some photos of their beautiful marshmallows. I just spotted a Lemon and Poppy Seed photo which sounds like another great combination to me. If you were to choose the next vegan marshmallow flavour, what would it be (either from current flavours or your imagination)?

Do you live in Nelson or plan on passing through? Posh Puffs have a stall at the Farmers Market and Sunday Market. Their marshmallows are even being sold in Fresh Choice in Nelson city and stockists in Nelson, Richmond, Mapua, Blenheim, and soon to be in Wellington. You will only find the vegan marshmallows at the markets or by ordering online. However, I am sure they can be seen elsewhere in the future if all of you show some interest. They really are worth it for a special treat or for someone special.

The Hemp Farm NZ

Standard

Who would like to be sent a 250ml bottle of Organic Hemp Seed Oil from Hemp Farm NZ Ltd as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?

Hemp Farm
The Hemp Farm was started by Dave and Anna who are passionate about the many uses of hemp and its environmental benefits. It is an absolutely amazing plant that is extremely versatile, yet it has been given such a bad name from the association to illegal drugs which has caused many different laws throughout countries. By the way, all of the goodness that comes out of these plants are not actually drugs and are extremely good for you!

“Hemp seed oil is an amazing addition to a vegan diet as it does provide those essential fatty acids in the optimum 3-1 ratio, plus all your essential minerals, amino acids and vitamin E. Plus it is chemical free and environmentally sustainable.” ~Hemp Farm NZ Ltd

Their oil is cold-pressed and 100% organic packed with lots of nutrition. There are so many uses for the oil. An easy way to add hemp oil into your food is in a salad, kale, veggies, or smoothies. I would love to make hemp pesto.

vegan kale

I really like hemp milk which is also extremely beneficial. I have even had hemp cereal, hemp butter, hemp seeds, and all sorts of yummy raw hemp desserts. There are plenty of opportunities in the future to see the benefits of this plant being used and being legal to consume in New Zealand, and I really look forward to following along and seeing The Hemp Farm grow and make this happen in New Zealand. If you come across hemp seed meal or hemp seed flour, it is a human grade product, but it is only legally able to be sold as animal feed in NZ. However, it is legal for humans to consume.

In case you missed it, The Hemp Farm was featured on Global Radar, and there is an article about their hemp seed on p.15 in the Nourish magazine. Hopefully all of the media coverage and people becoming more knowledgable about the uses and environmental benefits of hemp will help to gain more acceptance. Check out their New Zealand Hemp Crop Gallery. Recently they had their hemp fiber and hurd harvest which you can watch here.

Most of you know how much I like cloth nappies, and hemp is great for nappies and inserts. I would also love to use hemp in making body care, jewelry, and even in my house if I ever decided to build. The possibilities really are endless!

Go Bamboo

Standard

Who would like to be 1 of 5 lucky winners to be sent a Go Bamboo pack including 1 adult toothbrush, 1 child toothbrush, 1 box of 20 clothes pegs, 1 box of cotton buds, and 1 wax comb as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?

Go Bamboo
We love Go Bamboo products, and I am excited that so many of you have now become interested in their products as well. This New Zealand company is doing an awesome job providing biodegradable and sustainable products to protect our beaches and the environment.

“Our mission is to offer biodegradable, sustainable alternatives to everyday, disposable, plastic items and so limit the amount of plastic ending up in our oceans, on our beaches or in landfill.” ~Go Bamboo

These are effective and affordable award winning products that can be found throughout many stockists around the country, even across Australia and in the U.K. We bought ours through Cheeky Cherubs. Jacquie wrote a pretty cool blog post about their Environmentally Friendly Toothbrush Graveyard! I am sure that most children would love to hammer their toothbrushes into the ground when they are finished.

We all use bamboo toothbrushes! At the moment we have them in different places so we can tell them apart, but I have been trying to think of a clever way to make them each our own. What would you do to make them all different in your household?

We were also sent a few samples of cotton buds with our order which are awesome. They are made from a sustainable bamboo stick. I didn’t realise that they even made little bamboo wax combs for your keychain which I am very excited to try out. Any other surfers out there?

Check out the throwaway facts and about bamboo to see what makes all of Go Bamboo products a much better alternative. They also have a school fundraising program which is a fantastic way to involve the community and to learn and teach others about being sustainable.

The clothes pegs have multiple uses! In case you missed my previous post, they are perfect for making an eco-friendly driftwood display.

They are also great for hanging out cloth nappies and other laundry as well as keeping our gluten-free bread fresh.

ExtraFresh

Standard

Who would like to be 1 of 4 lucky winners to be sent a 6 pack carton of ExtraFresh as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?

ExtraFresh
We have only recently come across ExtraFresh, but we love the idea. We were given a single pack to try which was delivered to us with a range of other goodies from EcoDeals.

“Designed and made in NZ, especially for domestic fridges, ExtraFresh keeps fruit and vegetables fresher for longer, decreasing spoilage and ensuring that you enjoy the best possible eating experience.” ~ExtraFresh

To read more about how these packs work, check out the info section on their website. In short, these packs help reduce ethylene which you trap by putting all of your fruits and vegetables into a drawer. Without these packs, ripening occurs much more quickly which can lead to more wasted food.

I know that I do not like wasting food, and although we do compost what we do not eat, I do not like the idea of wasted money and food. Whether you put a lot of time and effort into growing your own fruit and vegetables or consider the environmental impact and labour from food production to supply in your local supermarket, there should be no desire to waste food and a lot more concern with the amount that ends up in landfill. The amount of wasted food is ridiculous in my opinion, and I am all for a product that can help preserve produce to stay fresher for longer. If you are buying produce from the supermarket, these will also allow you to buy a variety of produce without worrying about it not lasting. This will be better for a healthier lifestyle or save extra trips to the store which will save you time and money as well as saving you from contributing to the environmental impact due to more travel.

For those with one vegetable drawer, the ExtraFresh 6 pack carton will give you freshness for the entire year, or 6 months for a two drawer fridge.

Another way to involve the community in supporting sustainability is to fundraise with ExtraFresh. Whether schools or sport clubs want to be involved, this is a great way to involve the younger generation in protecting our environment and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Although ExtraFresh is quite new to us, I absolutely love the concept and the positive impact within the environment, our health, and the community.

Is there an ExtraFresh pack in your fridge?

Enter for your chance to have fresher produce all year long.

Would you like to be sent an ecostore cleaning pack with 1 500ml laundry liquid, 1 500ml dish liquid, 1 auto dish tabs, 1 spray cleaner, 1 toilet cleaner, 1 lemongrass soap, and 1 bucket as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?
Ecostore
We use a range of ecostore cleaning products throughout our house. The best part about these products is that they don’t test on animals. Ecostore products do not contain horrible chemicals, and they are a healthier alternative concerned with the environment and sustainability.

I think it is awesome to see how this dream began and how this local business has become so successful and contributed to protecting our environment. The products are easily accessible across supermarkets nationwide as well as many other shops. I have seen Bin Inn carry some of the bigger refill items. We try to reuse what we can by saving containers and refilling them rather than continuing to buy small items every time.

Besides their awesome products, ecostore has a blog which “discusses eco and health related issues, including natural parenting, allergies, art, culture, politics and the stuff that matters most…” It is definitely worth checking out, and I love the way that this company focuses on the overall well-being of the environment, not just specifically their products.

If you haven’t tried any ecostore products, make sure that you do. Eco-friendly products, especially cleaning ones, can sometimes be overlooked and thought not to work as well, but I can assure you that is not what we have experienced. They are definitely a much better choice than other products with chemicals because they do a great job as well as help protect the environment. We do not have any harsh chemical products around our house. You will only find ecostore!

Do you have a favourite ecostore product that you use or something that you would like to try?

It is hard to choose a favourite, but the product we definitely use the most is the hand wash. We have not actually tried the auto dish tabs yet, but we do use the powder. Make sure to check out the ingredients as a lot of products are vegan, but not all of them 🙂

Make sure to enter our giveaway for your chance to win this amazing ecostore cleaning pack.

BeBops Nappies & Amber

Standard

Would you like to be sent a OSFA BeBops nappy and amber necklace as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?
Cloth Nappy
These are amazing pocket nappies that have worked really well for us. Here are some previous photos of Zaedyn wearing his BeBops nappy for the first time. Check out the post for more details. Basically, the combination of the microfibre and bamboo fleece seem to be a perfect combination. Plus, snaps or domes work much better for us than velcro. Zaedyn would never have a nappy on if we used velcro!

cloth nappy

Cloth nappies save disposables from ending up in landfill, are super cute, and they save you lots of money. We use them full-time, and I cannot imagine it any other way. If you need more convincing, check out my Cloth Nappy tab, Pinterest board, and Cloth Nappy Week.
cloth nappy

As part of Cloth Nappy Week, we were sent a new BeBops nappy to try. As we have received a few things for baby lately, Zaedyn seems to think that everything coming in the post is for baby. Zaedyn was so excited to see the nappy and tell me that it was for baby!

cloth nappy

We have also recently purchased a new amber necklace for my sister’s baby that is due to arrive in July, and our little bub due to arrive at the end of September or beginning of October. The healing green is not a colour you often come across, and I loved it as soon as I saw it.

Zaedyn has worn his amber necklace since he was a few months old, and they have been amazing. We have only used amber beads and Chamomilla for teething. The healing baltic amber is a perfect natural alternative for your little one, and they are not only helpful for teething. If you or your child suffers from eczema, you may find that amber will reduce your symptoms. Here are a few other ways they might be able to help you or your baby so be sure to check out the current stock at BeBops along with the new stock of teething jewelry.

Check out the website and Facebook for more information. Go & like BeBops on Facebook to earn an extra entry in the giveaway and keep up to date with cloth nappies and recipes. There is also a competition open which will be drawn when there is 4,000 likes. Not long to go now at 3,939! Tash posts super yummy vegan recipes as well which always makes me hungry.

If you have been following along with Cloth Nappy Week, there were BeBops nappies being hidden around the country. It was awesome to follow along and be a part of it, and it is amazing to see all of the cloth nappy love which wouldn’t be possible without all of the sponsors. There was a huge nappy sale at 50% off so you will find that many of the new prints are out of stock, but there will be more to come :).

Make sure to enter for your chance to win a gorgeous BeBops cloth nappy and amber necklace.

Angel Foods Vegan Goodies & Cherub Dairy-Free

Standard

Would you like to be sent 2 packs of Vegan Cheesey Sauce from Angel Food and 2 tubs of Cherub Dairy-Free Cream Cheese Alternative as part of our Vegan & Eco-Friendly Giveaway?
NZ Vegan
I know Zaedyn would!
Vegan Mac N Cheese
We bought some Orgran Gluten Free rice and corn pasta macaroni to try out our Vegan Cheesey Sauce. I posted this photo a little while back on Facebook which some of you may have seen because he was so excited. He loves pasta, and this was the first time he had macaroni.

I used rice milk to make our cheesey sauce, and once I turned the stove up a little bit higher, it started to thicken up nicely. It was the first time we had ever tried this sauce so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Mixed in with gluten-free macaroni, it was a great combination by the look of Zaedyn’s expressions!

He had plenty of servings of vegan cheesey macaroni. I honestly cannot remember the last time that I had macaroni so it was hard to compare, but it did remind me more like a white sauce. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Either way it was yummy, but I cannot decide what it reminds me of.

Also, it makes 3 cups of sauce which can be a lot depending on how many people will be eating. There are plenty of other possible options to use this sauce with as well including a cheesey sauce on vegetables, lasagna, or even for nachos. We did try a few tortilla chips out in the sauce, and I think it would be perfect for nachos.

Do you eat Angel Food Cheesey Sauce? How do you use it, or what would you like to try it with?

Click here to see lots of photos posted previously from Gluten-Free Vegan Bagels with Cherub Dairy-Free Cream Cheese Alternative. Zaedyn gave it two thumbs up, and he also enjoyed it on toast and with Orgran Toasted Multigrain Crispibread with Quinoa (similar to Cruskits).

vegan cream cheese

Although Zaedyn was not quite sure what to think of the cream cheese alternative at first, he ended up loving it. He kept asking for “cheese”. When it was all gone, he said, “Oh no! The cheese is gone!” I was laughing as it was just so cute how he said it. We definitely made sure to get some more to enjoy on some gluten-free vegan hot cross buns.
Cherub Dairy Free Cream Cheese
This was another yummy way to use our cream cheese alternative. Obviously softer than bagels, but it reminds me of cinnamon raisin bagels with cream cheese. Yum! The cream cheese didn’t seem as melty this time around, and I put a lot on Zaedyn’s. He would eat all of his “cheese” off the top, and then ask for more.

Check out Cherub Dairy-Free on Facebook as there are different creative ways to use this cream cheese alternative. Would you use the cream cheese alternative as a spread, or in recipes?

Good luck with your entries in the giveaway, and make sure to share every day for extra entries.

Thanks heaps to Alice from Angel Food & Cherub Dairy-Free!

Another product from Angel Food that we eat is Cheezly which is perfect for pizza, cheese toast, toppings for tacos or nachos, quesadillas, added as cubes in pasta salad, or mixed in with scones. Anything you can think of really!
